Start with the product identity. The COA should name the product, extract, or sample clearly enough that it can be tied to the item you ordered. Generic wording such as “CBD oil sample” is weak when the seller carries multiple strengths, flavors, or formulas. Better reports identify the product name, sample type, and often the package size or concentration.

Next, match the lot or batch number. This is the most useful detail on the report. Find the lot number on the bottle, pouch, jar, or outer package and compare it character for character with the COA. A report for a different batch does not verify your product, even if the brand name and cannabinoid amount look similar.

Check the dates as well. The report should show when the laboratory received or tested the sample. A COA that is years old may describe a prior production run, not current inventory. There is no universal expiration date for every cannabis report, but current batches should have current documentation. If a seller cannot provide a report tied to the batch being sold, that is a straightforward reason to shop elsewhere.

Finally, inspect where the QR code or document came from. A code printed directly on the packaging or provided through an official product page is more credible than a screenshot sent in a message. Still, the document itself is what matters. Scan the code, open the report, and read the sample and batch details instead of stopping at the first page.

Read the Cannabinoid Results Without Guesswork

Most buyers look first for CBD potency. That makes sense, but the result has to be read in the right unit. A tincture may report CBD in milligrams per milliliter, milligrams per gram, or as a percentage. Gummies and capsules may show milligrams per unit. Flower and other raw material are commonly measured as a percentage by weight.

Compare the lab figure with the package claim using the same unit. For example, a 30 mL bottle marketed as containing 1,500 mg of CBD should average about 50 mg per mL. If the COA reports 5 mg per mL, the math does not support the label. If it reports 50 mg per gram, you may need the product density to make a precise comparison, so do not assume grams and milliliters are identical.

Small differences are normal. Manufacturing, sampling, and measurement all have tolerances. What should concern you is a major gap between the advertised amount and tested potency, especially when it consistently favors the marketing claim over the lab result.

Also check the cannabinoid profile against the product type. CBD isolate should show CBD with little to no detectable THC or minor cannabinoids. Full-spectrum CBD can contain THC, so buyers who need to avoid THC should not rely on product names alone.

THC Results Need Extra Attention

For hemp-derived products, the compliance figure is commonly total delta-9 THC on a dry-weight basis, but finished products and state rules can vary. If THC exposure matters for your work, testing requirements, or personal preference, a “hemp” label is not enough.

Look for the result, the reporting limit, and the testing method. “ND” means not detected above the laboratory’s reporting threshold. It does not always mean absolute zero. A low reporting limit provides more useful information than an ND result with no stated limit.

A Potency-Only COA Is Not the Full Picture

A complete CBD report should include contaminant testing appropriate to the product. Hemp can absorb materials from soil, and extracts can concentrate compounds from the source plant. The specific panel depends on whether you are buying oil, edible products, topicals, flower, or raw extract, but the core concerns are similar.

For a serious purchase, look for results covering:

  • Microbial contaminants, such as Salmonella, E. coli, yeast, and mold

A topical is not assessed the same as an inhalable product, and a raw flower sample can raise different microbial concerns than a sealed capsule. But a certificate that shows only CBD and THC numbers is a potency report, not a full quality review.

Read the result column instead of trusting a large “PASS” stamp. Good reports identify the analytes, show the measured result or ND status, and include action limits or accepted thresholds. If the report lists a failed result, a vague notation, or missing pages, do not explain it away. Ask for a current full-panel COA or choose another batch.

Other red flags include copy-and-paste formatting, cannabinoid results that are identical across unrelated batches, and reports where every compound is marked ND without detection limits.

A reputable seller should be able to provide the report without making the buyer chase it down. Easy access does not replace scrutiny, but it does show that documentation is part of the product workflow rather than an afterthought.

Use a simple sequence: match the product and lot, verify the test date, compare potency in the correct units, review THC, then confirm contaminant panels and lab details.
